The Back To School Rush

Back-to-school season brings a rush of excitement as we head back onto campus, eager to get back into our routines and reconnect with friends and peers. It always comes with a familiar feel of renewal, maybe even the urge to reinvent yourself into the”best version possible of yourself”. However, this time also brings inevitable anxiety as we fill our calendars with deadlines, evaluation dates, and events. We might find ourselves comparing our progress to that of our peers, feeling as though we’re falling behind if we haven’t completed all our readings, lecture notes, or gotten ahead on assignments. In the past, I have found myself setting ridiculous expectations that are unattainable, out of reach and maybe even irrelevant

That is why I have learned how crucial it is to avoid expecting too much of yourself. You know yourself best, and what people are doing around you is not how you should base your plans. Remember, every program at Queen’s is different, and so is every person. Whether it be their specialization, how much sleep they get, or how much alone time they need. It is okay if you’re not ahead on all fronts. The tasks and benchmarks are not what define you as a person.

Don’t forget that Queen's Commerce is an incredibly competitive program filled with some of the brightest business students in Canada. It can be easy to slip into a pattern of constant comparison. Just being at Queen’s is an accomplishment in itself! Instead, focus on surrounding yourself with people who lift you up, celebrate your wins, and help you move closer to your goals. I strive to surround myself with friends who I can study with but also have fun with!

Lastly, don’t forget to slow down and take time for yourself! Do something just for you—whether that’s surprising a friend, making spontaneous plans, or simply sleeping in. Embrace the time you get to spend at Queen’s!!
